The 5-Minute Breath Diagnostic

Find out if Layer 1 of your voice is broken.

This takes under five minutes. You will prove the problem in your own body before you spend a thing.

Stand or sit up straight. Put one hand on your chest and one hand on your belly. We are going to check one thing: how you breathe right before you sing.

Step 1 of 2

Take a normal pre-singing breath.

Hands in place. One on the chest, one on the belly. Now breathe in the way you would right before you start a song. Do not think about it. Just breathe the way you always do.

Which hand moved first?

Result: Layer 1 broken

Your chest moved first. You are breathing backwards.

This is the single most common reason a voice strains, breaks on high notes, and changes from one day to the next. When the chest leads, you have no real support underneath. Every note is fighting for air, so the throat tightens to make up for it.

Strain, inconsistency, and fatigue all trace back to this one moment. Good news: it is fixable, and you can feel the difference in the next two minutes.

The fix, right now

  1. Keep the belly hand on. Breathe in and push your belly hand out first. Let the chest stay still. Do this 5 slow times.
  2. Now try the same note or line you have been struggling with, keeping the belly leading the breath.
  3. Notice the difference. Less push from the throat. More room. That is Layer 1 starting to work.

That is one note, one layer. Your Layers 2 and 3 are still untouched, and only your specific voice can tell me what is locked. Want the full reset and the breakthrough you just felt across your whole range?

Result: Layer 1 looks supported

Your belly moved first. That is the right pattern.

Your breath is leading from the right place, which means your support is not the main thing holding you back. If you still strain, break on high notes, or get tired fast, the problem is most likely living one layer up, in your larynx.

That is Layer 2, the hardest one, the part every other teacher skips. You cannot fully diagnose it from a breath test. It takes hearing your actual voice.

Try this anyway

  1. Take a slow belly-led breath, the way you just did.
  2. Sing your stuck note again, but let the throat stay loose and open, no extra squeeze.
  3. Notice whether the tightness was coming from the throat, not the air. That points straight to Layer 2.

The diagnostic fixed one note on one layer. The Three-Layer Reset extends that win across all three layers, with one working exercise each, so your breath, your larynx, and your pitch all move. It picks up exactly where this test left off.
